One of a kind
Children's sermon
Object:
something made for you that is one of a kind, like a painting, a piece of pottery, a knitted scarf or sweater
Good morning, boys and girls. We are getting near the end of our season of Epiphany. We have learned a lot about Jesus and the beginning of his life and ministry. He became famous very fast and people wanted to be near him all of the time. Jesus was wonderful.
Not only was Jesus wonderful, but also the people thought that he was one of a kind. They kept talking about the things that he did, and they said to each other that they had never seen anything like this.
I brought along something that is a one-of-a-kind to me. My daughter made this piece of pottery for me when she was in school. She made it with her own two hands. No one else helped her. The design was in her head, her heart, and her hands. She worked a long time to make it just the way she wanted it to look. Then after it was all done she gave it to me. It is one of a kind, and I will always treasure it.
Great painters have painted one painting that they thought was their very best. It is one of a kind. Composers have written a piece of music that they thought was the very best that they could do. It was one of a kind. People who knit make one sweater or scarf that is very special and it is one of a kind. It is said that God makes each snowflake different. Each snowflake is one of a kind.
All of these things are wonderful, but not one of them is as special as Jesus. Jesus was one of a kind and there has never been anyone like him or even close to him since. He was the best teacher, the best healer, and the best forgiver. Whatever Jesus did, he was the best. He was one of a kind.
The next time you see someone making something that looks like it is the only one, you can think about Jesus. Remember, the people that were with him listened very carefully and watched very carefully. They had never seen anything like it. One day he healed and another day he taught. One day he raised someone from the dead and another day he helped someone whom no one else could help. The people saw it happening and they were amazed. Their eyes were wide open, and they said that Jesus was one of a kind; there was no one else like him.
The same thing is true today. Jesus brings us to God in a lot of ways. All of us are different, but the way he works with us is a one-of-a-kind experience. Jesus loves you very much.
