Our inheritance
Children's sermon
Object:
some inherited objects like a dish or a painting or something yo
In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will. (v. 11)
Good morning, boys and girls. I brought some things with me today that are very important to me. First, they are very good things. This is a very beautiful dish that was made a long time ago in China and was owned by other people before I got it. This painting is also very valuable to me because it is not only a beautiful painting but because someone else once owned it. I have other things at home that are special for the same reason. I have a gold pocket watch, some valuable coins, and some furniture that are valuable and once owned by someone else.
Where do you think I got these beautiful treasures? (let them answer) They were not given to me by my husband/wife or my friends. My children did not give them to me. Who do you think gave them to me? (let them answer)
That's right, they were given to me by my parents and by my uncles and aunts. If you look on the back or the bottom of these beautiful things, you will see something special. (show them your name written on tape and attached to the pieces) Can you read what it says? (let them answer) That word is my name. A long time before I received this, my mother wrote my name on the bottom of the dish. And a long time ago, my uncle wrote my name on the back of this picture. When they died, they wanted me to have the dish and the painting. We call this my inheritance. Can you say inheritance? (let them say it several times) This dish and that painting were in my parents' and uncle's house when they lived, but they wanted me to inherit them. Because they gave them to me, they are very special to me.
Saint Paul talks about inheritance, also. He tells us that Jesus gave all who believed in him a great gift, a great inheritance. Jesus has given us a place in his new world. Jesus has made us his brother and sister with his death on the cross and his resurrection. We are now a different people than we were before Jesus died for our sins. Jesus gives us the gift that we can live with God forever.
This is the greatest gift God could give us and he made it possible through Jesus. We have an (let them say, "inheritance"). Very good, we have an inheritance from Jesus and that inheritance means we are the children of God and have a life that lives forever. Amen.
