Our king
Children's sermon
Object:
a rubber band, a piece of rope, some scotch tape, a paper clip
He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together. (v. 17)
Good morning, boys and girls. Today is the last day of the church year. Next week will be like New Year's Day for the church. Next week will be Advent and we will start a whole new year of worship. But today is a very important day. We call it Christ The King Sunday and we worship Jesus as our king. How many of you know what a king does? (let them answer) A king is the head of a whole country. We do not have a lot of kings today. When Jesus lived, every country had a king. The king was a person that not only ruled over all of the people but, if he was a good king, he kept the country together.
For instance, I brought with me little kings that we use all of the time. I have a rubber band, what does a rubber band do? (let them answer) It holds pencils, newspapers, and even dollar bills together. I have a piece of rope and what does a piece of rope do? (let them answer) A rope can keep a boat tied to the dock. A rope can tie up your hands and a rope can pull a wagon. A rope keeps things together. I also have some scotch tape and paper clips. Does anyone know what scotch tape and paper clips do? (let them answer) They keep papers together, help wrap packages, and fix torn paper. All of these things are like little kings; they keep things together so that nothing comes apart.
Jesus is our king. Jesus does it all. He was there when the world was made and he put things in the right places. The stars went in the sky along with the sun and moon. He put fish in the sea with penguins and seals. He grew seeds into corn and beans. He made us so that we could talk and listen to each other. Jesus, the king, holds our world together. Jesus, the king, makes the rain and the wind and the night. King Jesus also forgives our sins and invites us to be his followers forever.
The next time you see a little king like some scotch tape or a paper clip, I want you to think about the greatest king. I want you to think about Jesus Christ our king. Amen.
