Our road trip
Children's sermon
Object:
a toy car
We will be with the Lord forever. (v. 17b)
Good morning, boys and girls! How many of you have toy cars or trucks? (allow answers each time) How many of your parents have real cars or trucks? What do we use cars for? That's right -- to get from one place to another. What are some good things about cars? (allow answers) Good answers! They usually get us safely to our destinations, don't they?
How many of you have heard of a song titled "Life Is A Highway"? The song talks about how our lives are like cars on a road trip. How many of you have been on a road trip, or a vacation where you drove a long way? (allow answers each time) Did you watch any of the towns go by as you drove? What did you do to pass the time? Where were you going? Do you ever think of your life as a car trip? In a car, sometimes you have to stop and get more gas. But sometimes we have to stop what we're doing and get something to eat! Both people and cars need their fuel! When we're driving in a car, we get to see new places. As we grow up, we get to try new things. What is something new that you've done lately? (allow answers)
How else are our lives like a road trip? (allow answers) Sometimes when your parents are driving, they pass other cars on the road, don't they? Sometimes in life we pass other people, too. You might grow to be taller than your parents! Or you might get better grades in school than one of your friends. Or it might happen the other way: Maybe somebody else is smarter than you, or faster than you, or taller than you. That might make you feel bad, but remember that God loves you no matter what! Maybe those people who are passing you have a different place to go than you do. Sometimes when we're in the car, our parents take a wrong turn, don't they? Have you ever been lost on a road trip? (allow answers) How did it feel? (allow answers) Sometimes we get lost in our lives, too. Sometimes people stop coming to church and praying to God, and their lives get mixed up. Thankfully, if we're in a car, we can use a map! If we're lost in our lives, we have the Bible that can help us get back on the road that God wants us to travel.
In today's reading, Saint Paul says that "we will be with the Lord forever." He's talking about heaven! In our road trip of life, the final destination is heaven! Once we get there, it will be the best vacation ever -- and we'll never have to leave. Amen.
