Our special bodies
Children's sermon
Object:
tobacco, drugs, bottle of liquor, candy, small television, or headphones
Good morning, boys and girls. Today we are going to talk about a special gift that God gave to all of us. It is called our body. Does everyone have a body? (let them answer) That means we all have something in common.
What do you like most about your body? (let them answer) Some of you say your face, others their hands, some like their muscles, and others like their fingers. I like many parts of my body, but if I had to choose just one body part, it would be my eyes.
Not everyone likes their body. Some people even treat it pretty badly. The other day I saw a television show about boys and girls who were taking drugs. It was awful. They were acting strange and it seemed like they had a headache all of the time. Other people were smoking tobacco and we know how dangerous this is to our body. Can you imagine why anyone would drink so much that he or she did not know where they were, who they were with, or what they were saying?
Of course those are not the only bad things for our bodies, are they? (let them answer) What happens when you eat too much candy? (let them answer) You're right, its bad for your teeth. What else is bad for your body? (let them answer) What about sitting around and watching television? Is that good for you? Which is better for you, playing outside or watching television? (let them answer) You are right, again. And how about listening to music that is too loud? Do you think that is good for your ears and your hearing? (let them answer) Well, we know all of the right answers but that doesn't mean a lot, does it? All of these things can harm our bodies. They are sins against God and our bodies. These sins can be especially difficult because it is often hard to stop bad habits.
Some of us watch too much television, eat too much candy, and listen to loud music, and all of that hurts our bodies. Paul calls it sin against God. Our bodies are temples that God created and gave to us. He expects us to exercise, eat the right food, get the right amount of rest, and enjoy the world that God made.
The next time you hear about drugs, smoking, drinking, eating the wrong foods, and spoiling our hearing, I want you to think about the sin you are committing and the insults you are making to God. Take care of the body God created, make it strong and enjoy your life in the kingdom of God.
