Our strength
Children's sermon
Object:
several kinds of picture hooks
No testing has overtaken you that is not common to everyone. God is faithful,
and he will not let you be tested beyond your strength, but with the testing he will
also provide the way out so that you may be able to endure it. (v. 13)
Good morning, boys and girls. Today we are going to talk about the strength God gives you. Did you know that there are different kinds of strengths? (let them answer) I brought a few things along with me to show you how different our strength can be. (show the picture hooks) How many of you know what these things are? (let them answer) That's right, they are hooks, picture hooks. Are they different sizes? (let them answer) Which picture hook do you think will hold the biggest picture? (let them answer) That's right, this big picture hook will hold the biggest picture. Can you find the hook that will hold the smallest picture? (let them pick it out) That was easy, wasn't it? (let them answer) Each one of these hooks will hold a different weight of picture. Usually, the bigger the hook, the bigger the picture it will hold and the smaller the hook, the smaller the picture it will hold.
God gives us different kind of strengths, just like the picture hooks. Most of the time, God gives us the kind of strength that we need for regular living. He gives our parents strength to raise us and he gives us strength to go to school and make friends and take tests. God gives us strength to handle bumps and bruises when we fall off of our bikes or skateboards.
There are other times when we need a whole lot of strength, the kind of strength that we never knew we were going to need and God is there to give that big strength. Suppose we are really sick or one of our parents is really sick. We need something really strong, stronger than we have ever needed before. We may be asked to do things that we have never done before. God gives us that kind of power.
I knew a boy who needed a lot of extra strength when his parents were involved in an automobile accident. He thought he would never be able to go to school and come home and do homework. He never thought he could visit a hospital or listen to doctors explain what they needed to do. But a friend asked him to pray to God for extra strength so that he could be a help to his parents and not someone that they would have to worry about. Right there in the hospital, God gave my friend new strength, super strength, and he knew that everything was going to work out right.
Most of the time, we can use just regular hooks to live our lives. But remember, if you ever need a bigger hook, God is ready to give you all of the strength that you need. Amen.
