Parable of movie-goers
Children's sermon
Object:
a bag of popcorn
Good morning, boys and girls. I brought some popcorn this
morning because it reminds me of when I go see a movie. Do you
buy popcorn when you go to a movie? (Let them answer.) I want to
tell you a story about some children who went to a movie. This
story is similar to this morning's Bible story. This story says
something about our need to keep watch and wait for Jesus' return
when he comes for us.
Once there were 10 friends who went to see a movie. They arrived at the theater before the movie started. Five of the friends wanted popcorn. They decided to buy it before the movie started. So, they went and bought their popcorn. They were prepared. The other five were lazy. They didn't want to get up from their seats. Soon the movie started. The five without popcorn cried to the friends with popcorn. "Give us some of your popcorn, so we can eat it and watch the movie!" The five with popcorn said, "No, there may not be enough for both us and you. Go get some yourselves."
So, the lazy friends went to buy popcorn for themselves. But while they were in line for popcorn the best part of the movie came, and they missed it! Then, to their surprise, when they went to go back into the theater, the theater owner shut the door and said, "Sorry, no one is allowed in without a ticket." The five lazy friends left their tickets in their coats. "Sir! Sir!" they cried. "Open the door for us!" But it was too late. The theater owner would not open the door. The five lazy friends missed the movie.
This story is about us waiting for Jesus coming again. We must be like the five friends who were prepared. They bought their popcorn before the movie started. They didn't wait until it was too late.
Jesus wants us to be prepared for his return. He wants us to live lives that are helpful to others while we are waiting for him. Jesus doesn't want us to be unprepared. When we live lives that Jesus wants us to live, we will be ready for Jesus, when he comes for us.
