Passing the story on
Children's sermon
Object:
a baton that runners use when running a relay race
For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you. (v. 23a)
Good evening, boys and girls. Is anyone here a fast runner? (let them answer) Everyone thinks they are fast runners and I suppose you are all faster than me. Has anyone ever been in a race? (let them answer) Races are fun. Sometimes we win and sometimes we lose, but it is a lot of fun to see who is the fastest that day.
How many of you have ever been in a relay race? (let them answer) A relay race is when runners are on a team in one race. The first runner races as fast as he/she can to where the next runner is waiting and when the first runner comes to the second runner a baton is passed from runner one to runner two. Then runner two races as fast as he/she can run to the third runner and when they get very close the second runner passes the baton to the third runner. The third runner does the same thing to the fourth runner. He/she hands it to the fourth runner and the fourth runner runs as fast as he/she can run to the finishing line. The race is over and the team that gets there first with the baton is the winner.
Paul learned from God the story about Jesus and what happened on this night. God passed Paul the baton and Paul was passing it on to the people that lived in Corinth. The Corinthians heard the story God had given to Paul and they passed it on. Now the story is being passed on to you just as God passed the story to Paul. For more than 2,000 years, the story of this night has been passed from one person to another. You will hear the story and you can pass it on to someone else.
Jesus and his twelve disciples were eating in a big room on the second floor. They were eating a special meal for all Jewish people called the Passover. During the meal, Jesus took the bread that was on the table and broke it into pieces and passed it around to the disciples. Jesus told them that when they ate this bread and remembered what happened that night, it would be like filling up on Jesus' body. Eat the bread and you will know the presence of Jesus inside of you. Then Jesus took the wine on the table and poured some into their cups. He told them that when they remembered this night and drank this wine, they would be filled with Jesus. Having God inside of you is wonderful. Jesus said the bread and wine that becomes his body and blood is so powerful that it can forgive sins and make us pure. It also promises us that we will live with Jesus in heaven and that there will be a place for every one of us.
Paul passes that story on to us, just like runners pass the baton. The story never changes. The miracle always happens. We eat the bread and drink the wine and we are filled with Jesus and completely forgiven for our sins. We want to thank Paul for passing it on to us and to all of our friends. Amen.
