Peace! Be still!
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: Children (and adults) are afraid of
storms -- the literal storms of nature or the storms of life.
One of the great gifts of faith is the gift of peace and
stillness within.
* Six months ago was Christmas. Sing the hymn "Oh Come, Oh Come Emmanuel" and say that the word "Emmanuel" means "God is with us." Ask, "How can that help us when we are afraid?"
* Celebrate Emmanuel with a Christmas celebration.
* Make little wooden boats for the children to take home or take to the swimming pool and pretend that Jesus is in the boat and that he stops the waves, wind, and lightning.
* Make a sign or symbol for your class that says: "Without Christ we have no peace; with Christ we know peace." (It could be a simple symbol: "No Christ, no peace; With Christ, know peace.")
* In two days the church calendar celebrates the birth of John the Baptist (six months prior to Jesus' birth). Tell how John the Baptist told about the peace of Christ"
* Teach the children the Hebrew word shalom -- "peace."
* Relating the text to life: Trust and quiet confidence comes to the person of faith. The assurance that Jesus is with us no matter what is a great asset to give your children.
Sunday school assembly opening:
* Share the peace of the Lord.
* Sing "Eternal Father, Strong to Save."
* You can re-enact the biblical story but use instruments to simulate the sounds of the storm. The "Peace! Be still!" could be spoken into the sound system. Have an authoritative voice do this unexpectedly.
