The peace of the comforter
Children's Activity
Object:
The Holy Spirit is part of God, just as Jesus Christ is part
of God. It is very difficult for children to understand that God
has three parts and yet is still one God. Another thing that
makes the Holy Spirit difficult to comprehend is that we don't
have any pictures; the Holy Spirit isn't a person that we can
imagine. It's hard to understand something that we cannot see.
For some children, things are not real unless they can be seen.
A balloon can be helpful in understanding the Holy Spirit.
Take an empty balloon and look at it with the children. It has no
life in it when it is deflated. Now blow it up. Suddenly, it has
a firm shape. It is full of life and it is buoyant. The air
inside the balloon is invisible, yet we know it is there by the
balloon's shape. The balloon is changed when the air is added.
It is the same way with the Holy Spirit. It is invisible,
yet it is still there all the same. When the Holy Spirit is
inside us, we are more alive. We are more resilient. We are held
afloat by the support that it provides us.
The disciples were afraid of being without Jesus. They were
scared when Jesus told them that he would be leaving them. But
Jesus promised them that they wouldn't be alone, even though they
wouldn't be able to see him any longer. Things would be different
with him gone, but he promised that there was no need to fear.
The disciples would still have all the strength and peace they
needed. He makes that same promise to us today.
