A permanent reminder
Children's sermon
Object:
a pencil, an eraser, a pen, and a piece of paper
Good morning, boys and girls. Do you remember how we talked about me last week? (let them answer) Good, because I want to talk about the difference between me being a pastor/priest/preacher and Jesus.
I want you to know that I am only here temporarily, just like other people who live and die. My work has a beginning and an end. But that is not the way it is with Jesus. Jesus lives forever.
Let me show you a little of what I mean. I brought along a pencil, a piece of paper, and an eraser. I am going to write down my name with this pencil. (write down your name clearly so that the children can see it)
I also brought along this pen with ink in it. I am going to write my name down again, only this time I am going to use the pen. (write this also clearly) Now, I am going to erase my name written in pencil. (erase it with a good eraser so that your name is removed) I am also going to do the same thing with my name that is written with the pen. (try to remove it) What happened? (let them answer) That's right, the name written in pencil is not permanent but the name written in ink is permanent. You cannot erase the name written in pen.
I tell you this because I want you to know that Jesus is a permanent savior, a loving God, and he will be with us forever. Pastors are born and they die. They do their work because God called them, and when their work is done other pastors come and serve where the first pastor served.
But that is not true with Jesus. Jesus is like the pen. He is here forever. Jesus will work with every pastor, calling them into his service and teaching them. Jesus will pray with those pastors everyday and encourage them to do good work.
Pastors are like pencils. They are not here forever. They do the things Jesus taught them to. They baptize people, share the communion, and visit people in their homes and hospitals. They teach the Bible and preach about the wonder of God. But when they have done all that they have been called to do, they die and wait for Jesus to invite them into heaven. But Jesus lives on as the great pastor/priest/preacher. He was here before the world, when the world was born, and will be with us after everything else is finished.
The next time you see a pen and pencil, you will remember how permanent Jesus is in our lives.
