The Pharisees
Children's sermon
Object:
a copy of the Ten Commandments
Good morning to you! (hold up the commandments) These are the Ten Commandments. They are rules that God gave Moses many, many years ago in order to help the Hebrew people know how to love God and live together. (read a few of the rules to the children) The Ten Commandments are good rules for us to follow.
They're so good, in fact, that people have been adding to them ever since. A special group formed within the Hebrew people to help make and interpret laws that the people of God should follow. These people were called Pharisees. Over many, many years, the Pharisees added law upon law for the people to follow. The Pharisees believed that unless people followed every law exactly, they would fall out of God's favor. The Pharisees eventually became so demanding that people were scared of them. They were kind of like God police telling people how to live their lives.
Jesus spent a lot of time with the Pharisees trying to help them understand that although rules are important, how a person lives and treats others is more important. A person can follow every law in the world and still not be kind to others. Following rules alone doesn't make us good people. Jesus is more concerned with how we treat each other and with how we speak to one another. Even if we do right things we show who we really are when we speak lies and unkind words.
We have rules for a reason. (show the commandments again) They are important, but following rules isn't what makes us good people. It's what's in our heart that matters.
Prayer: Father, help us know why we have rules and help us live our lives the way we should. Amen.
