Planting the seed
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: This week's lesson is about growing
things from seed. Here are two activities you may do with this
theme. Explain to the children that many things grow from seeds.
Jesus compared his ministry to a seed. His ministry started small
and grew into the church today.
1 -- Have grass seed, soil and Styrofoam cups available. Help students pot the soil and plant the seed. Then lightly water the soil in the cups. Within a week grass will appear from the soil. Compare the grass to the growing church. When the grass is taller suggest that the children plant it in their own lawns.
2 -- Purchase a container of mustard seeds in a grocery store. Show the seeds to the children. Explain that these small seeds are what Jesus used to tell people about the kingdom of God. Give each child some seeds and a sheet of 8 1/2 by 11 paper. Next using clear tape, drop each student's seeds on a section of tape. Tape the seeds to the bottom of the sheet. Have the students draw a picture of a field with plants growing. The seeds should be taped to the bottom of the picture in the soil portion of the drawing. At the top of the picture have the child write the words "The Kingdom of God is like a mustard seed."
