Pleasant dreams
Children's sermon
Object:
a teddy bear
Good morning, boys and girls. This morning I brought my
favorite teddy bear with me. I used to sleep with this every
night. Do any of you sleep with a stuffed animal? (Let them
answer.) Do you sleep better with your stuffed animals around
you? (Let them answer.)
Do you dream at night? (Let them answer.) Do you ever dream about things that you are thinking about before you go to sleep? (Let them answer.) This morning's Bible story is about Joseph. He had dreams. I believe that he dreamed about things that he was thinking about, too. In one of his dreams an angel spoke to him. Have any of you ever dreamed of angels? (Let them answer.) Joseph had a very important dream. I want to tell you about it.
Joseph and Mary and Jesus were being hunted by King Herod. They were very afraid. King Herod was jealous of the baby Jesus. He was jealous because the wise men told King Herod that they were looking for the king of the Jews. That king was baby Jesus. Do you know what King Herod wanted to do when he found out about baby Jesus? (Let them answer.) He wanted to kill baby Jesus. That's why Joseph was afraid. Joseph was trying to decide what to do to keep away from King Herod. One night while Joseph was asleep he had a dream. In his dream an angel of the Lord appeared. The angel told Joseph what to do. The angel told him to get up right then and take the child and his mother and flee to Egypt. The family was to remain there until it was safe to return. That's what Joseph did. He woke up in the middle of the night. He, Mary and Jesus fled to Egypt. They stayed there until it was safe.
So, sometimes dreams are very important. Joseph's dreams kept his family safe, thanks to an angel of God.
