Plugged in
Children's sermon
Object:
a small electrical light with an extension cord
Good morning! Sometimes I feel like I'm in darkness. I get
confused sometimes and wonder what is the right thing to do or
not to do. Sometimes I don't feel very brave and sometimes I
don't feel very strong. Sometimes I do and say things that are
not exactly the way I want to say and do things. Sometimes I
think things I would rather not think. I feel like this light
here. What would happen if this light were in a dark room? (Let
them answer.) The answer is that nothing would happen to this
light -- unless the light is plugged in and turned on! (Do it to
the lamp.) Now we have light!
The apostle Paul once said that we are like a lamp that is not plugged in or turned on. It just sits there in the dark. But when God comes into our lives, not only do we have light, we are light! That's a nice compliment -- to be light!
Chances are, when you were baptized, the pastor gave your parents or sponsors a candle and said, "Let your light so shine before others ...." Pastors sometimes do that because in baptism we are plugged in to God and are turned on; we are lights! A baptismal candle reminds us of this. The lamp here today helps remind us that we are lights.
So, dear young lights -- shine brightly! God is with you! We can shine because of the power of God in our lives. God is with us all the time. Sometimes, like with this lamp, all we have to do is turn it on.
Dear God of Light: Thank you for giving us the light so that we can shine. When we are in the dark about things, we know your power helps us shine. Amen.
