Poured into our hearts
Children's sermon
Object:
a pitcher of water and a drinking glass
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you have a pet? (Let
them answer. Ask a few of the children to tell what kind of pet
they own.) We have many dogs and cats (if that is the case). Do
any of you have any unusual pets? (Wait for an answer.) I'll bet
that you love your pets. In a way they are part of your family.
Let's imagine something for a moment. Think about how much you
love your pet. It's real easy to love your pet isn't it? You
didn't have to learn to love it. You probably loved it the moment
you saw it.
If it was lost you'd look for it. If it was hurt, you'd take care of it. If it was hungry you'd feed it, wouldn't you? If you can imagine how much you love your pet, then you know how much God loves you. God loves you more than you love your pet. Can you imagine that?
This morning's lesson tells us about God's love. I didn't bring a pet to share, but I brought something else. It shows us how easy it is for God to love us. Our lesson says that "God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us." I brought a pitcher of water and an empty glass. Let's pretend that the water in the pitcher is God's love for us. Let's pretend that the empty glass is our heart. Watch how easy it is for God's love to pour into our hearts. (Pour some water into the glass.) Remember this week that God's love has been poured into our hearts. God loves us all, just as we love our pets.
