In our prayers for you we always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus
Christ .... (v. 3)
Good morning, boys and girls. We are going to do something special today that we should do every day. Before I tell you what I am going to do I want to ask you a few questions. I am going to write down your answers and then I will show you how we are going to use them. (select each child one at a time and ask a question -- continue to ask questions until every child has been able to give an answer or maybe two if you have a small group)
Who would like to be first? My question for you is this, who is your best friend? (write down the answer) Next question, which is your friendliest neighbor? (write it down) Who takes care of you when you don't feel well? (write it down) Who is your favorite teacher in school? (write it down) Who do you like to ride your bike with the best? (write it down) Who is your favorite aunt? (write it down) What are the names of your brothers and sisters? (write it down)
What do you think we are going to do with all of these names? (let them answer) We could write them a letter or send each one a gift. Maybe we could invite them over to our home for a cookout or take them to a movie, but we are not going to do any of those things.
We are going to do what the Bible teaches us to do. Do you know what the Bible says we should do with these names and many other names? (let them answer) The Bible teaches us to pray for them. Saint Paul would always thank God for the people who loved Jesus. These people were his friends. Paul would get up in the morning and tell God how much he loved the people that loved Jesus. He would name them one by one and pray that God would care for them. He prayed for people like Timothy, Pricilla, Barnabus, Peter, and James. He would pray for people that lived in cities like Corinth, Ephesus, Rome, and Jerusalem. Paul was a traveler and he knew hundreds or thousands of people. He would pray for them and thank God for the joy that each one brought to him.
We can do what Paul did. I have a list of names that you have shared with me today and I would like for you to bow your heads, fold your hands, and pray with me. (say a prayer, include all of the names and the things they did)
I am sure that if you sit down with your mom and dad and ask them to help you make up a list of names, then you can be like Paul in the Bible. You can pray for the people you know before you go to sleep at night or when you wake up in the morning. You to can thank God for the love shared with you in Jesus Christ. Amen.
