Priceless gift
Children's sermon
Object:
Offering envelope (or offering plate)
Today many members of this church will do something very
important. They will put their offering in the offering plate. We
do this because we love God and part of loving God is giving back
to God some of the blessings God has given us.
Giving is an important part of what we do as Christians. (Talk about the children giving their offerings if you have a special children's offering as part of your church or Sunday school.) We have our example of giving from God.
When I think of giving I often think of birthdays or Christmas. At those times gifts are given in appreciation for the person. Do you like to get gifts on your birthday? (Let them answer.) What did you get for Christmas? (Let them answer.) We learn to give because God gave us Jesus Christ. He was the first Christmas gift that started all the giving that is done in church.
God gave again at Easter. At Easter Jesus gave up his whole life. God gave Jesus a resurrected life. God gives each of us a new, resurrected life as well.
So Christmas and Easter are two big church holy-days. There is a third one that many of us don't realize or appreciate in its importance. That day is today -- Pentecost. On this day God gave us the Holy Spirit. The reading from John calls the Holy Spirit our "Advocate."
This gift of God is invisible. You cannot see the Advocate. You cannot feel the Holy Spirit. You can only receive the gift. Today let God live in you. We'll let God live in us by praying. Let's bow our heads and pray: "Dear God, come and live in us. Send your Holy Spirit into our lives today. Amen."
