A cardboard box cut to look like a television screen
Good morning! I brought a television so that I could be a
better speaker this morning. (Put the box in front of you as if
you were on television.) This is better. Now, maybe I'll be like
the actors and actresses who are on television. They don't make
very many mistakes, and sometimes I do. Sometimes I forget what I
want to say or I stutter or I say the wrong thing. I wish I were
as good as the people on television!
How many of you have ever been to a television studio? (Let them answer.) Did you know that the people who are on television often have the opportunity to say things over and over again until they get it right? They can get to be perfect. But when I say something or when you say something, we might have mistakes or interruptions that are not on television. I guess this isn't television and we'll have to accept each other as being less- than-perfect people.
The apostle Paul noted that he was not perfect either. He told his congregation in Corinth that he did not come with "lofty words" or "wisdom" (v. 1) and that he did come "in weakness" and "in fear" and "in much trembling" (v. 3). But he told the people the wonderful story of Jesus. That was enough.
I'm glad we don't have to be perfect to tell the story of Jesus.
Dear Jesus: The story of your life is so powerful and it is all we need. Thank you! Amen.
