A promise through faith
Children's sermon
Object:
a family heirloom (something that you received from a
parent and plan to give to your own child)
Good morning, boys and girls. Has someone ever promised to
give you something, or promised to do something with you? (Let
them answer.) Did you ever have to wait a long time before the
promise came true? (Let them answer.) I want to show you
something that my parents gave to me. (Show the object. Explain
its background and meaning to you.) My parents promised this to
me when I was about your age. When they promised this to me I
eagerly awaited the day that it would be mine.
I want to tell you the story about a little girl about your age. The girl played with a doll that was very old. Her grandmother owned the doll. The grandmother promised the little girl that one day the doll would be the little girl's. The girl could not wait for that day. She waited many years for the doll. As she waited, her faith in her grandmother's promise never weakened. Although it seemed forever, she knew that someday the doll would be her own. Finally the day came. The girl was old enough to have the responsibility to take care of the doll. Her grandmother gave the doll to the girl. Although it was a long wait, the girl never lost faith in her grandmother's promise. She knew the promise would come true because she had faith in her grandmother.
This same thing once happened to a man named Abraham. He lived many years ago. We call Abraham the father of our faith. We call him this because God made Abraham a promise. God promised Abraham that he would have children, many grandchildren and many, many great-grandchildren. Abraham was very old when God made this promise. Just like the girl waiting for the doll, Abraham had to wait a very long time for the promise to come true. Abraham waited and waited. He knew God's promise to him would come true because he trusted God.
This week I want you to remember to have faith and trust in God. God promises that if we trust in God our faith will help us get through life. Sometimes we must wait a long time. As we wait we must remember to keep our faith in God. God's promises to us will come true when we have faith.
