Promises, promises
Children's sermon
Object:
a blank promissory note
Good morning! Have you ever broken a promise that you made?
(Let them answer and talk about how that happened.) Has anybody
ever broken a promise that they made to you? (Let them answer and
discuss the situation.) It isn't a good thing to break a promise
or to have somebody break a promise that they made to you, is it?
(Let them answer.)
Here is a form that is used by people to make sure people
keep their promises. This is called a "promissory note." (Show
the note.) When somebody borrows money and promises to pay it
back, they sign this kind of paper, and they are then legally
required to do what it says on the note. If they don't keep their
promise, the person holding the note can take them to court and
make them keep the promise.
People break promises that they make to God too. In the
Bible, God says that some people honor Him with their lips, but
not with their hearts. That means that they say they will do the
right thing, but they don't keep their promise. Now God doesn't
make us sign a promissory note like this, but do you think it's a
good thing to break our promises to God? (Let them answer.) No,
it surely isn't. Let's tell God that we will honor Him with our
hearts as well as our lips.
Dear Father in Heaven: We know there have been times when we have
broken our promises and we want to honor You always both with our
lips and our hearts. Help us to keep our promises to be the kind
of people You want us to be. Amen.
