Promises, promises
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: In this Gospel reading, we see Jesus
speaking of the difference between giving lip service to God and
really trying to be a follower. God wants our actions to follow
our words. Our children should be taught that they should keep
their promises to God and to others.
*Ask the children if they have ever made a promise that they
didn't keep. If anyone has, let them tell about it and discuss
the consequences of their failure. If nobody has, or nobody wants
to admit that they have, use a hypothetical situation and discuss
the negative consequences.
*Put up a list of promises that God has made in the Bible.
Use such things as the promise not to flood the earth again and
the rainbow as the seal of that promise, the promise to send a
Savior, the promise of Jesus to return, and so forth. Talk about
these promises of God and show how He has kept them or will keep
them if they are still in the future (such as the return of
Jesus). Make sure they see that God keeps His promises and
discuss how we should also keep ours.
Sunday school assembly opening:
*Make a list on the board or easel of what they name as the
most important promises that people make to each other and to
God. When you have several listed, discuss what happens when
these promises are broken.
