Protect me, Lord

When the devil had finished every test, he departed from him until an
opportune time. (v. 13)
Good morning, boys and girls. Today is the first Sunday in Lent and it is an important day. Our Bible lesson today talks about the time Jesus and the devil met and the things that the devil offered to Jesus. We forget sometimes about the devil and all of the things he can do.
On this day, the devil offered Jesus three things if he would just worship him. First, he offered Jesus food because he was hungry after not eating for forty days. Jesus refused the devil. Next, the devil told him to go to the highest point on earth and look at all of the countries and all of the wealth in those countries and think about it all belonging to him if he would only worship the devil. Jesus refused. Finally, the devil thought about something that would make him very popular with all the people who saw it or heard about it. The devil suggested that he go to the top of the temple and then just dive off it but instead of hitting the ground and dying, the angels would catch him in the air and bring him safely to the earth. Jesus refused. The devil then left Jesus. At least he left him for a time.
I wonder where the devil went and what he is doing. Has anyone here today had a talk with the devil? (let them answer) Did you see the devil in a meeting at school or in the backyard of your house? Sometimes the devil hides in very strange places. If you have pockets in your pants, sweaters, or skirts I want you to pull out your pockets like this (demonstrate pulling out your pockets), and see if the devil falls out. Did anyone see the devil? (let them answer) He wasn't in your pockets.
Let's look around a little bit. Is there an empty pew in our church where the devil might be? (check out any empty pews) I don't see the devil in any empty pews. I have one more idea. I thought maybe the devil would live in the waste paper basket. No one would ever think of looking in a waste paper basket. (look in the wastebasket) It doesn't look like he is there.
Do you know where the devil would like to hide? (let them answer) That's right. He would like to hide in our hearts and get us to do awful things, but I am sure the devil is not there. As a matter of fact, I do not know where the devil is this morning, but I do know one thing: The devil is alive and waiting for just the right time. The Bible tells us so. The Bible says that when he could not get Jesus to do anything that he suggested, he slipped away to wait for another time.
Every day I pray and use the name of Jesus in my prayer to keep the devil away. I would like you to do the same thing. Just say this, "Dear Lord Jesus, protect me from the devil and all of his ways. Amen."
Do you think you could pray this prayer every day? (repeat it several times with the children until they have it) Amen.
