He it is who gave himself for us that he might redeem us from all iniquity and purify for himself a people of his own who are zealous for good deeds. (v. 14)
Good morning, girls and boys! How are you this morning? (allow answers) Do you know what today is? (allow answers) Today is the day we've been waiting for. Today is the day we celebrate Jesus' birth! Happy birthday, Jesus! (encourage the children to say it with you) Happy birthday!
When we celebrate Jesus' birthday, we are celebrating the day he was born. How many of you have gone to see a baby when the baby was first born? (allow answers) Maybe you went to the hospital to see the newborn baby. Maybe you went to the baby's house. Or maybe you saw the baby somewhere else -- at church, at a neighbor's house, at daycare or school.
When you see a new baby, what do you have to be careful about? (allow answers) You have to be careful not to hurt the baby. You have to be careful not to spread germs to the baby. Babies are very tiny and can get sick easily. So what do we do in order not to spread germs? (allow answers) We have to wash our hands. We have to make sure our hands are clean -- "purify" our hands -- before we can touch the baby.
Does anyone know what "purify" means? (allow answers) To purify something is to make it very clean. Our reading today talks about purifying things: it talks about purifying people. The reading says that Jesus was born to die for us so that he could purify us -- make us clean -- and turn us into people who want to do good things in the world.
How does Jesus purify us? Do you know? (allow answers) Jesus purifies us because he paid for our sins. It's like we had a big bill from God -- a big "you owe me" -- that was too expensive for us to ever hope to repay. But then Jesus stepped in and paid our bill. He took away our debt -- our sin -- and washed us clean.
On Christmas we celebrate Jesus' birth. We aren't thinking of the way he will die on the cross or what will happen years later. Instead, we are purifying ourselves -- doing good deeds, showing God's love -- so that we can get close enough to see baby Jesus. Amen.
