Rah! Rah! Rah!
Children's sermon
Object:
a tape of a school fight song common to your community, perhaps you could wear the school sweatshirt
Good morning, boys and girls. I brought a song for you to listen to. I think you'll recognize it. There's a part in it for you to cheer, so go ahead! (play the tape and encourage the children to cheer loudly and sing or hum along) Wasn't that a great song? (let them answer) Why do people get all excited when they hear this song? (let them answer) It's a school song and it is always played when the football team or the basketball team has a game. People like to cheer for their team. It shows they are behind their team and want to support them whether they win or lose. How does that make the team feel when they hear the people sing and cheer? (let them answer) They get excited, too, and want to play their best for the fans who are singing and cheering for their team. What does the team do right when they come on the field or the court? (let them answer) They poke at each other, give high fives, pat each other, and jump up and down. Then they go into a huddle and jump up and say, "Yeah, team!" (if you are comfortable doing it, you might want to demonstrate and involve the children)
Our lesson today is about singing together, but not for a school team; it's for our church family. What kind of team spirit could we have in our church family? (let them answer) When someone in church receives an honor, we should all cheer with them. When someone is sick, we should stand by them and encourage them with the same kind of team spirit we show our school teams. We should be excited and proud to be part of this church family! But many times when we sing, lots of people don't sound very much like they're cheering and supporting each other. Some don't even open their mouths to sing at all, let alone to cheer! Our lesson says we should sing and praise God! Praise means we think God is terrific and has done great things! I know a song that sounds like a school song and we should all be able to make it sound like a school song! It's "Go Tell It On The Mountain!" Let's all sing it and pretend we're singing a school song! (sing just the chorus in a rousing exuberant manner, using the choir if needed)
