Raised with Christ
Children's sermon
Object:
a bunch of flowers and a cross, at least three feet tall, covered with rubber bands
Happy Easter! Who can tell me what Easter is about? (get responses) That's right. Jesus Christ rose from the dead on the first Easter! Did you know that God loves us so much that he let his only Son die for our sins? But Jesus rose from the dead. That's a miracle, isn't it!
God's love is more powerful than death. Easter is a time to praise God and celebrate how wonderful and powerful he is. His love is stronger than anything else in the world.
See this cross? (hold up the cross) A long time ago, criminals were hung on crosses to die. That was their punishment for breaking the law. Jesus died on a cross too, because some people thought he was a criminal. They didn't like the things he said, so they killed him. They took nails and hammered his feet and hands to the cross and left him there. For many people, the cross was a symbol of death and pain. On Easter, though, that changed. When Jesus came back from the dead, it was like the cross didn't have power anymore. Death didn't have any power. Without the cross, we wouldn't know how much God really loves us. Suddenly the cross wasn't a symbol of pain. It was a symbol of love.
Today I want us all to celebrate that. (hold up the flowers) I've brought these flowers and I'd like to cover the cross with them. See the rubber bands? Let's put our flowers in the rubber bands and make this cross look pretty. People used to be afraid of crosses, but we know that crosses are beautiful. That's what Easter is all about. Let's celebrate Easter by covering the cross with these flowers.
Prayer: Thank you, God, for the miracle of the cross. Your love is stronger than death. You love us so very much. Amen.
