The ransom is paid!

a newspaper clipping about a kidnapping (newspaper
archives at the library will have one)
Good morning! I have here a newspaper article about a
kidnapping. It seems that ... (tell them about the story in the
clipping). Now when somebody is kidnapped, the usual reason for
kidnapping them is money. The kidnappers want somebody to pay
them money to release the prisoner. Does anybody know what we
call the money paid to get someone released from the kidnappers?
(Let them answer.) It's called a "ransom." A ransom is paid in
order to get someone released by the bad guys.
The Bible tells us that you and I were ransomed. What do you
think it means by that? Were you and I kidnapped by bad guys and
held for ransom? (Let them answer.) In a way we were, because
there is a really bad guy who wants all of us to die, and unless
it has been paid, we would all die. Who do you think I'm talking
about? (Let them answer.) I'm talking about the devil, old Satan,
the evil one. He is the one who wants only bad for us, but the
ransom has been paid for all of us. When Jesus died on the cross
he paid the full ransom for all of us. We are free of that mean
old kidnapper, Satan. Everyone who believes in Jesus has been
freed. Their ransom is paid! Let's thank Jesus for paying it for
us.
Dear Jesus: We thank you so much for paying the ransom for us so
that we can be free of the devil. Keep us ever mindful of the
terrible price you had to pay to free us. Amen.
