But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid; for see -- I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord." (vv. 10-11)
Good morning, boys and girls! How are you this morning? (allow answers) How many of you have seen someone read a newspaper before? (allow answers) What do you find in a newspaper? (allow answers) Newspapers report all of the news for a city or town. Newspapers tell about babies who are born, people who have died, businesses, politics, events, and weather. They give us a lot of information! If you have an announcement about something, you would probably want to put it in the newspaper. What kind of announcements might you want to put in a newspaper? (allow answers)
One kind of announcement is a birth announcement. Newspapers list the names of babies who have recently been born, letting the whole town know that there is a brand-new person in the world! Birth announcements are great news -- and in fact, our gospel lesson today talks about a birth announcement. Whose birth are we celebrating today? (allow answers) Jesus! In our gospel lesson, we hear the story of how Jesus was born. We also hear the story of his birth announcement. How was Jesus' birth announced? (allow answers) Jesus' birth was announced by angels singing in the sky! Wow! What a birth announcement! Imagine if Jesus' birth had just been announced in the newspaper -- it wouldn't have been nearly as exciting. People might have read past it, skipped the page, or forgotten his name. Instead, there were angels singing in the sky. That's not something that you can ignore, skip, or forget easily.
Two thousand years later, we still haven't forgotten about it. We are still celebrating Jesus' birth and remembering that choir of angels singing to the shepherds about Jesus' birth. We are still talking about the way God brought his Son into the world: in a lowly manger, to a pair of young travelers, announced by angels, greeted by shepherds and kings. God brought his Son into the world for all people and he sent his angels to let us know. Amen.
