Children's sermon
Object:
a book about Abraham Lincoln, a magazine or book about Tiger
Woods
I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you
a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him. (v. 17)
Good morning, boys and girls. Have you ever heard about a man named Abraham Lincoln? (show the book and let them answer) What do you know about Abraham Lincoln? (let them answer each question) He was the president of the United States. Do you know when he was president? Do you know what he did that made him famous? Do you know where he grew up and what kind of a job he did before he became president? Do you know the name of his wife and the number of children he had? Do you know anything about the speeches he gave and where he gave them?
How many of you have every heard of Tiger Woods? (show the magazine or book and let them answer) What does Tiger do? (let them answer each question) That's right, he is a golfer. Do you know who taught him to play golf? Do you know the name of the university he graduated from as a student? Do you know how many tournaments he has won? Do you know the name of his wife or the name of his baby? Do you watch him on television or listen to him on the radio when he is playing?
We know the name of Abraham Lincoln and we know the name of Tiger Woods but we don't know a lot more about them, do we?
When Saint Paul wrote to the people that belonged to the church in a town called Ephesus he said that Christians should learn a lot more about Jesus than his name. The best part is Paul says that you can learn a lot about Jesus and his wonderful Father God. Where and how do we learn about Jesus and the Father? (let them answer) We learn about Jesus from reading the Bible or listening to people read the Bible to us. Where else can we learn about Jesus? (let them answer) We learn about Jesus when we come to Sunday school and our church services. We can learn when we say our prayers and when we talk with other Christians about Jesus. Every day we can learn more about Jesus and when we do learn, we come closer and closer to him. Jesus will be your best friend for the rest of your life.
If you want to know more about people than just their name you need to read and ask questions. If you want to know more about Jesus you can read your Bible, talk to other Christians, come to Sunday school and church, and share him with your friends. Amen.
