2)
Good morning, boys and girls. I thought we might talk about the things that are really important to us. I brought some things with me this morning but first I would like for you to tell me what you think is the most important thing that you have. (let them answer) Are you sure that I could not trade you anything I have for your most important thing? (let them answer) I have a lot of money. Would you trade me your most important thing for money?
I brought along a bag with some of the things that are really important to me. I could not think of just one thing. I decided that I had to have all of these things. Let's look at what is important to me. First, I want a lot of money so I am going to put that in my bag. Then I thought it would be good if I put in all of my awards. This is for being the president of my club. This was given to me when I was ordained a pastor. I am very proud of them so I am going to take them with me. I also have some pictures of my family. They are a great family and I am so proud of them. I am going to take their pictures. I packed a few great books. I have never read them but people tell me that I should read them so I am going to take them with me. I am not going anywhere without my radio. I play the songs that give me great memories. I would take my computer but I am not sure where I would plug it in. I am not forgetting my tools, I may need them to fix something when I get there. Oh, did I tell you where I am going? (let them answer) I'm going to heaven. I am not sure when, but I know I will go sometime and I want to be ready.
What would you take to heaven? Would you take a radio, tools, and books? Would you take a lot of money, awards, and pictures? (let them answer) You think God has a lot better things than the things we have thought about. I am glad you think like you do. I was only fooling. God tells us not be caught up in all of the things I was putting in my bag: money, books, a radio, and awards are not needed in heaven.
Saint Paul said it another way. He said to dream of all the wonderful things God is getting ready for you and forget the things you have on earth. Heaven is full of God's glory and every one of us is going to be so happy in heaven that we will not even remember what our belongings were even like on earth. Amen.
