The real power
Children's sermon
Object:
a cell phone and its battery charger
God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and
seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places. (v. 20)
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you have seen or used a cell phone? (let them answer) A few years ago the only kind of phones we had were the phones in our houses, businesses, or sometimes in a booth on the street. Now almost everyone has a phone and they can call other people from anywhere. I was watching a ball game on the television and people were talking on their phones. I see a lot of people talking on their phones from inside of their cars. Go to the mall and you will see people walking around talking on their phones. Almost everyone carries a phone.
How do these phones work? (let them answer) Some of you have used a cell phone. Where do they get their power? (let them answer) That's right, there is a battery in every phone. Where does the battery get its power? (let them answer) You are right again, the power in the battery comes from the electric outlet. (hold up the battery charger) We could keep going back and we would discover that the electricity comes from coal or water and the coal comes from the ground and the water from the sky and everything in the ground and everything that comes from the sky comes from God. That is where all of the power really starts.
Paul knew something about power and he talked about the power in Jesus. No one else has ever lived again after they died, but Jesus was given the power to be resurrected. Where did that power come from? (let them answer) It didn't come from a battery or an electric outlet. It did not come from coal or rain. It came from God the Father who gave Jesus the power to be resurrected. Jesus is power. Jesus is glory. Jesus is from God and part of that power was used in his resurrection.
Jesus uses this power in heaven. He sits beside God the Father and uses his power to make things happen in this world. The Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are charged with power and God makes the whole world turn.
The next time you see a cell phone, remember that it works because of a battery. The battery works because of the battery charger that plugs in the wall. The wall plug gets its power from coal or water. The water comes from heaven and the coal from the ground God made, which are all part of God's power and God's plan.
When you know all of that, then you will understand that God gave Jesus the power to be resurrected and live again. Amen.
