Real power!
Children's sermon
Object:
a baptismal gown (or white alb might do)
I love the Superman stories. When I was young I would buy and
read Superman comics. I also liked Superboy and Supergirl comics.
Superman was just like an average person until he changed into
his clothes. Then what happened? (Let them answer.) Then he could
do nearly anything!
I think I liked the Superman comics because I really wished there were a Superman or Superwoman who would do good things in magical and powerful ways. But these stories of super-human people are just stories. They are not real.
I brought a baptismal gown. So often when a baby is baptized or an adult gets baptized, they are covered with a white gown. It shows that they can receive God's power. It's not exactly like Superman's clothes, but in some ways it is more powerful than his clothes because they represent God's power.
When Jesus left this earth in his body, he promised his people that they would receive power like clothing. The power would make them strong in things they wouldn't think they could be strong in. For example, it is hard to forgive someone who has hurt us. But the Holy Spirit gives the believer power to do this. Sometimes it is hard when you have a sad day -- but God is always with us and God's Holy Spirit has clothed us with power.
I'm glad that we have real power from a real God. I hope that the power of God will continue to grow in each of you.
