Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: The transfiguration event shows us a very
important truth about Jesus. The three disciples who were present
saw him as he really was, the incarnate son of God, the second
person of the Trinity. The event gives us a good opportunity to
talk with our children about the two natures of Christ. He is
true man and true God at one and the same time. This is one of
the mysteries that we will never fully comprehend until we get to
Heaven, but it is important for all Christians to believe that he
is both fully God and fully man at the same time. We should begin
teaching this fact to our children as soon as possible.
*Show the children a picture of yourself as a young child, a
picture that they would not recognize as you. Ask them if they
can tell you who is in the picture. When they are unable to do
so, reveal that it is you and ask them to tell you why they could
not recognize you. Discuss with them how you are still the same
person, but grown up into what you were meant to be by God. Use
this to talk of the transfiguration event. The disciples knew
Jesus as a man, but had not seen his God-side until the
transfiguration.
*Show the children a coin and ask them to identify it. Turn
the coin over and ask if it is still the same coin. Point out the
differences between one side and the other. Now ask them to
suppose that they had never seen the second side. They had seen
only the first side. Would they have any idea what was on the
other side? Would they perhaps assume that the other side was the
same as the side they were familiar with? Use this example to
show how the disciples reacted to seeing the "other side" of
Jesus.
Sunday school assembly opening:
*Sing a hymn from your hymnal that speaks of the
transfiguration such as "It's Good Lord To Be Here."
