I want to tell how the first Pentecost day happened. It happened in the morning when the disciples were together. Suddenly from heaven came a sound like the rush of a violent wind. It filled the entire house where the disciples were sitting. The Bible says that divided tongues, like fire, appeared among them. A tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit. When the Holy Spirit filled them they began to speak in other languages. God's Spirit gave them this ability.
Everyone who heard the disciples speak were amazed. Peter then
stood up and told the crowd that was watching and listening that
the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the disciples. This was
the birth of the New Testament church. We are all members of that
church today.
I don't have a birthday cake to celebrate the event. I have
something else, however. I want each of you to take one of these
red (scarves or crepe paper). You can pretend that these are the
flames of the Holy Spirit. Another way to think of these is that
they are the flames of the birthday candles on a Pentecost Sunday
birthday cake. Each one of you is a flame of the Holy Spirit of
God -- not just today, but every day. As you go back to your seats
wave your flame in the air so that everyone here can know what it
was like on that first Pentecost Sunday -- the day the divided
tongues, like fire, appeared to the disciples. (Hand out the
scarves.)
