Removing obstacles
Children's sermon
Object:
Block an aisle with a sawhorse or two. Place signs on them like, "Do Not Enter," "Detour," "Road Closed," or "Enter At Your Own Risk." You can mark the area off with yellow tape and even have a red light blinking. Have a boom box to be played when you spe
Good morning, boys and girls. It looks like you're trying to enter a dangerous area. (read the signs out loud) I'll try to speak up so that you can hear me. (turn up the music on the boom box) Can you hear me? (Let them answer; turn the music up again) This is awful! I have something very important to say to you but there is too much noise and too great a distance between us.
I'm sorry about all of the obstacles in your way. I apologize for the noise and for the aisle being blocked. Maybe we can meet after church in a room that isn't locked, or maybe we can send each other e-mail messages. What do you think? (let them answer)
Wait a minute. We don't have to have this noise and all of these signs in church. Let's turn off the music and move the barriers and tape. (ask an adult volunteer to move the sawhorse and the tape) That's better. Come on up here and sit down. We need to get together and talk about Jesus and I think that's more important than all of the obstacles.
Saint Paul faced a lot of obstacles when he wanted to teach the people in Corinth about Jesus Christ. People like Paul had to have a lot of patience and endurance. He was put in prison by people who were afraid of him. Paul was beaten and kept awake all night, and he was given no food. But Paul had a lot of confidence in God and no matter how badly they treated him, Paul was patient and kind to his captors. He had a bright spirit and prayed for people who tried to hurt him. Paul wanted everyone to know the gentle love of Jesus and he cared for people who mistreated him.
Pretty soon the people began to notice that Paul was not hateful or angry no matter what they did to him. Instead he told them about a loving Savior who was willing to die for their sins. After a while, they released him to teach others about the Savior.
Sometimes we create obstacles for other people. Sometimes we are mean to our friends or feel angry with them. Sometimes we don't feel like sharing our toys. Those are obstacles for them. Remember that people want to follow a Christian who shows the love of Jesus in all the areas of his life.
