Resurrection
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: Death is a subject we usually avoid
discussing with our children. Christians have nothing to fear
from death and we need to instill in our children an
understanding that death is a door to eternal life and not the
end of life. The raising of Lazarus by Jesus gives us a good
opportunity to show that God is in control and will give life to
those who believe in His Son, Jesus.
*Bring a picture of a caterpillar, a cocoon, and a butterfly
to show the children. Ask them if they know what happens to the
caterpillar when it spins a cocoon and is dormant for a while.
When they have talked about how it emerges from the cocoon as a
butterfly and you have shown the pictures, relate this to how we
all enter the tomb, but emerge in Heaven. (If you can locate a
real caterpillar, cocoon, and a butterfly, it will be more
effective.)
*Role-play the resurrection of Lazarus. Have the children
act out the event and then discuss how all of us will also be
raised from the dead, just as Lazarus was raised.
*Have the children draw a picture of Jesus raising Lazarus
from the dead or color a picture that is already drawn.
Sunday school assembly opening:
*Ask the children to separate themselves into two groups,
one of dead people and the other of those who are alive. When
they all get into the group of those who are alive, explain that
they are in the correct group because they believe in Jesus.
People who don't believe are spiritually dead already and will
not have eternal life. Those who believe have already been given
eternal life.
