Revelation
Children's sermon
Object:
a trick picture (Look under "illusions" in an
encyclopedia or perhaps you have books with illustrated trick
pictures in them.)
I have here a picture. (In this trick picture, I have a
young woman or an old woman -- depending on what the eye
catches.) If you look at the picture carefully you can see a
beautiful, young woman. But look closely and you can see
something else. See -- it can also be the picture of an old
woman.
The trick picture actually reveals two pictures! The key is
the word "reveal" because it is a word for this time of the
church year. We call this season that comes right after
Christmas the "Epiphany season." The fancy word "Epiphany"
really means "reveal."
Just as you were able to see two pictures instead of one
once I pointed it out to you, so God has given us a more complete
picture of what God has done for us. Because of Jesus, we know
more about God. God reveals himself through Jesus. In Jesus we
begin to understand God's love.
When Jesus was born, not everyone knew about him. All those
people in Bethlehem thought he was just another baby. But Mary
and Joseph knew better. God had revealed to them who Jesus was.
Likewise, the shepherds in the fields. Here angels revealed that
Jesus was born in Bethlehem. The wise men from the East knew
what King Herod did not know. They knew where Jesus was to be
found because a star revealed it to them.
The fancy word for reveal is "Epiphany." God is still
revealing himself to people like you and me. Maybe this
Epiphany season God will reveal even more of himself to us.
Dear Lord: Reveal yourself to us so that we can know you well.
Amen.
