Rewards
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: Children know what rewards are all
about. They expect to receive something when they do well, and
they should. They should also know that God will have rewards in
Heaven for the good things we do here in this life. We must be
careful, however, that they don't begin to see Heaven itself as a
reward for the good things we do. Heaven is a gift, not a reward!
But it certainly is good to let them know that their good deeds
will not go unnoticed by God.
*Play a game of Bible Trivia and have a reward of some kind
for the winner. Talk about the importance of knowing the Bible
well and the rewards that we will receive through Bible study.
*Ask the children how many of them receive an allowance. Ask
if there is some way they can lose their allowance and then
discuss how an allowance is a reward the parents give for doing
something. They receive the allowance in direct relationship to
what they do for the parents, so it is reasonable to assume that
God, our spiritual parent, also has rewards for us in Heaven.
However, just as they are part of the family from birth, not as a
result of any action on their part, so we who believe are part of
God's family and our heavenly home is not a reward, but a God-
given home for believers. The rewards are given to those who have
received the gift of Heaven already.
Sunday school assembly opening:
*Ask the children to tell you a reward that they have
received for something. You may want to explain the term,
especially if some or all of the children are young. List their
answers on a blackboard or easel until you have several listed.
Then ask them if they think God might have any rewards for us in
Heaven and talk about that. Be sure to separate the rewards God
gives in Heaven from the gift of Heaven, which is not a reward.
