Right now!
Children's sermon
Object:
a game requiring timing (could be jacks, patty cake or
any kind of child's game)
I have a game here that perhaps you know how to play. I used
to play it when I was younger. It's a fun game. One of the things
this game requires is timing. What is "timing"? (Let them
answer.) Timing is doing something at just the right time. If I
don't do this at exactly the right time, then the game will not
work for me.
On this special day of the church year we read that God had an "acceptable time" when Jesus came to earth and ministered, died and rose again. Just like the game, timing is important -- even for God!
The important time for God is RIGHT NOW! It is important that God worked with people in the PAST. I am so glad that we have the Holy Scriptures to show us God's actions with God's beloved people in the past. I am glad that 2,000 years ago Jesus came to minister IN PERSON! I am glad for the great women and men in the life of the church who lived and loved and ministered. All that has happened in the PAST is important. I'm especially glad my church was there when I was much younger.
It is also important that God is there for us in the FUTURE. I believe that on the day I die, God will be there for me. That is comforting to know. The FUTURE is important.
Most of all, I'm glad that God is here NOW. I am glad that I don't have to only read about and hear about a God who lived long ago. I am glad I don't have only the future to look forward to. I am glad that God is here RIGHT NOW -- for me and for you. This moment -- RIGHT NOW -- is God's acceptable time.
