Like a rug
Children's sermon
Object:
a rug
Good morning. Where would we put this rug? (Let them answer.)
What do we use rugs for? (Let them answer.) Rugs belong on the
floor, don't they. We use them to walk on and sometimes we wipe
our feet on them.
I brought this rug this morning to make a point about Jesus. We say that Jesus is our Lord. The word "Lord" means someone who is very powerful. In some English countries, you address a powerful person as "My Lord." A king or queen often wears something to show power. It is called a crown. The crown goes on their heads to show their power. The rug goes under everyone's feet to show its lack of power.
Jesus is the most powerful person in history. The Apostle Paul says that Jesus puts "all things under his feet." What do you suppose that means? (Let them answer.) It means, of course, that everyone and every thing is beneath Jesus. No one is more powerful than Jesus. Sometimes we see pictures of Jesus with a crown because Jesus is truly our "Lord" -- our King.
Jesus is especially King or Lord of the church. Everything we do is for him -- at least we try to do it that way. It is easy for us to forget that Jesus is our King -- our Lord -- and that we are under him -- like this rug. But today you have helped me remind myself, you and others about our wonderful Lord, our loving King -- Jesus! Thank you!
