Sad/Happy
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers: The story of Easter morning begins sad but has a
happy ending. Mary stands in front of the open tomb weeping. Then
she meets Jesus and does not know him. Eventually she recognizes
him and runs to the disciples to tell that "I have seen the
Lord."
Tell your class the Easter story. Explain that this sad story has a happy ending. See if your class can help you make a list of sad things and a list of happy things. Some examples of sad things might be: a bee sting, spilling a glass of juice, losing a toy, finding your favorite cereal box empty, or a sad color. Happy things might include: a Christmas present, birthday party, a surprise letter, a rainbow, or a happy color.
After you compile a list of "sad/happy" things give each student a sheet of 81/2 by 11 paper. Suggest that the students draw two pictures on it. On the left draw Mary's sad face before she recognizes Jesus. The caption might read "Weeping outside the tomb." On the right draw Mary's happy face after she recognizes Jesus. The heading might read "I have seen the Lord."
Parents: Your child talked about and helped make a list of things that are sad/happy. The drawing shows: 1) Mary's expression before she realizes Jesus rose on Easter morning; 2) and after she sees the Lord.
