Savior, Messiah, Lord
Children's sermon
Object:
A campaign poster (or news photo) from this year's
presidential election
Today I brought a campaign poster of our president. The
people of the country elected him as our president this year.
Does anybody remember the name of the other man running against
him in November? (Let them respond.) The people elected this man
our president. (Show them the poster.) The people voted for him
because they thought he could run the country.
Do you think a baby will ever get to be president of the United States? (Let them respond.) I doubt it! A baby doesn't have enough experience. You have to know a lot about how a government works and you have to know a lot of people to get elected president. A baby could never know enough.
Yet Jesus was called a "Savior" and "the Messiah" and "the Lord" while he was just a new, little baby! How can that be? (Let them respond.) Jesus was the King while he was just a baby. That is amazing!
Jesus was given the job by God. That was different for him. People choose presidents, but God chose Jesus to be the Savior, the Messiah, the Lord and our King. God knew exactly who the best person to do all this would be. It was his only Son Jesus.
God knew this from the very beginning. Most people didn't know it when Jesus was born. Who else knew that Jesus would be the Lord? (Let them respond.) Mary, Joseph. Some angels told some shepherds. If others knew about it, I don't think they would have let Jesus be born in a stable. They would have wanted their king to be born in a palace.
Dear God: Thank you for our Savior, Messiah, Lord, and King, Jesus. Thank you for this wonderful night we call "Christmas." Amen.
