The secret is out!
Children's sermon
Object:
a Christmas present with a manger scene Jesus inside
Good morning, boys and girls. I brought a present with me this
morning that was under our tree. This present is a bit of a
mystery. There is no one's name on it. Have any of you ever found
presents under your tree with no one's name on the outside? (Let
them answer.)
I want to tell you a story of a little girl about your age. Like you, she was getting ready for Christmas. She was waiting patiently until it was time to open presents. She liked to make things for members of her family. As she made things she would wrap them and put them under the tree as presents for different family members. Do any of you do that? (Let them answer.) She would draw pictures and then wrap them and put them under the tree. She wrote a poem and wrapped it. She even had a gift for her cat that she wrapped and placed under the tree.
Every time she placed a gift under the tree she would look at the other gifts already under the tree. She noticed a gift like this one -- with no name on it. (Hold up your gift.) As Christmas came nearer and nearer, this gift became more and more of a mystery. She didn't know who it was for or whom it was from. Finally it was time to open the presents. When all were passed around, the mystery gift was still under the tree. Now it's time to open the mystery gift to see what it is. (Select someone to open it.) It is baby Jesus.
The Bible tells us that for many, many years God had a secret for us. Jesus is the mystery that God kept secret. But, when Jesus was born, God's secret was no longer a secret. Jesus told everyone of the truth of God. Jesus told everyone of the love of God. Jesus told everyone that we are all children of God. That is the secret, or the mystery gift, that came to us at Christmas.
When you unwrap your presents later this week, remember the secret gift of God. That gift is Jesus. Jesus is the reason we celebrate Christmas.
