Seeing clearly
Children's sermon
Object:
a blindfold and several items, including a Bible
Good morning! Do all of you have good eyesight? Can you see
clearly? (Let them answer.) Yes, I'm sure you all do see well. So
if I hold up one of these things (point to the items), you would
all be able to tell me what it was, right? (Let them answer.)
Well, I'm going to ask one of you to do that, but I'm going to
make it a little tougher. I'm going to ask you to do it with a
blindfold on. (Blindfold one of the children.)
Now __________, I will hold up something and I want you to
tell me what it is. (Hold up something and ask the child to guess
what it is.) Well, he/she got that wrong. Why wasn't he/she able
to tell me what I was holding up? (Let them answer.) Of course,
we can't see if we are blindfolded. Well, do you know something?
That's the way a lot of people are when they read this book.
(Show the Bible.) They try to read it like it's just another
book. They don't turn to God and pray for His guidance as they
read it. As a result, they are just like ___________ when he/she
was blindfolded. They don't understand what they are reading
because they haven't really turned to God and asked for His help.
To understand the Bible, we need God's help.
With that in mind, what are you going to do the next time
you read the Bible? (Let them answer.) Good! Let's ask God to
help us right now.
Dear Father in Heaven: We praise and thank You for giving us the
Bible. Please help us understand all that You have caused to be
written in it. Amen.
