a coloring book and crayons
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you like to take
trips in the car with your parents? (Let them answer.) I brought
a coloring book and some crayons with me this morning. These
remind me of taking long trips in the car and of this morning's
lesson. When you go on a trip with your parents, do you take
something like these with you, so you have something to do in the
car? (Hold up the coloring book and crayons and let them answer.)
What other things do you take with you when you go on a long
trip? (Let them answer.)
Jesus and his disciples had traveled all around the region of Galilee. While they traveled Jesus taught people about God. Jesus healed people of their diseases. The disciples knew that Jesus' power came from God. One day Jesus told his disciples that he was going to send them out to do the same kind of teaching and healing that he had been doing. Then he told them what to take with them on their journey. This is why my coloring book and crayons remind me of this morning's lesson. He told them to take nothing for their journey except a walking stick, called a staff. They should also take shoes and clothing.
Then the disciples went out on their journeys -- two by two. They told everyone that they saw about God's love. They told people to change their ways. They healed many people who were sick, just as Jesus did. The disciples discovered that they had God's power and they did great things.
The next time you go on a trip with your parents remember to take some things along with you like coloring books and crayons. The next time you go on a trip remember that Jesus sent his disciples on journeys also. The disciples took the power of God with them. They told people about God's love. They healed people in the name of God.
