Set apart
Children's sermon
Object:
a quarantine sign (make one in large letters)
Good morning! Have any of you ever seen a sign like this?
(Show the sign and let them answer.) Years ago, before they could
cure disease as well as they do now, they used signs like this to
tell people that a house was quarantined. It meant that nobody
could go into or leave the house. By setting the people in the
house apart like that and not letting other people have contact
with the sick people, there was less likelihood that the disease
would spread.
Once, Saint Paul wrote to the Christians at Rome that he had
been set apart for the gospel of God. Do you think that he meant
God had quarantined him so he could not have contact with other
people? (Let them answer.) No, of course not. God wanted him to
contact as many people as possible to tell them the good news
about Jesus. So what do you think Paul meant by saying he had
been set apart? (Let them answer.)
He was saying that he was set apart from others because he
had a special mission from God that others didn't have. In a way,
all believers are set apart from the rest of the people in the
world because those who believe in Jesus are special people for
God. That means that you and I are also set apart as special
people of God. Do we, like Paul, have a mission from God? (Let
them answer.) Yes, indeed, we do!
Every Christian is expected to share the good news about
Jesus with others who don't believe. We have something that most
of the people in the world don't have; we have faith. But,
instead of being quarantined, God wants us to spread this faith
to everybody in the world. We want everybody in the world to
catch what we've got. Let's ask God to help us share our faith.
Dear God: We're so glad that You have set us apart to be Your
special people. Help us to share the good news about Jesus to
everyone that we know. Amen.
