Set the word free
Children's sermon
Object:
a length of rope about three feet long
The Apostle Paul did many good things for God. He wrote several books of the New Testament and he spent much of his time encouraging people to live godly lives. He traveled a great deal and visited Christians in many places. In some places people were happy to see him and welcomed him into their homes. The people in some places, though, didn't want Paul to visit. Some people didn't like him, mainly because they didn't like him sharing the message of Jesus Christ. Several times Paul was even thrown in jail for sharing God's word!
In today's reading Paul talks about how he suffered for sharing the Gospel with others. He says that he was even "chained like a criminal." Even though I'm sure this was upsetting to him, he says that "the word of God is not chained." Let's see if we can figure out what he was talking about.
See here? (hold up the rope) I have a long piece of rope. I'd like one of you to tie my hands together. (choose a helper to do this) Okay. Let's pretend that I am chained and in jail. See? I can't move my hands -- I'm not free anymore. But the words of my mouth are still free, aren't they? I can still tell you about God, even though I am tied up. I can tell you that God loves you. I can tell you that Jesus Christ loves us. I can tell you that we can live forever with him in a perfect heaven. I can still tell you all the important things I think God wants you to know.
The things that happened could have discouraged Paul. Instead, he chose to view his imprisonment as an opportunity. He wanted people to see his suffering and know that he wasn't worried. He wanted them to know that he was going to share about God's love no matter what happened to him. We should try to live like that too. Instead of getting all tied up by our troubles and concerns, we should look for ways to share God's message of hope and love to the world. Always be on the lookout for easy ways to help the word of God go free!
Now would someone untie me, please?
Prayer: Help us to share your word in all circumstances. Amen.
