In today's Gospel Lesson we hear a story about a man possessed by demons. The Bible tells us that he has been ill for a long time, and it's likely that the people around him didn't know what to do with him. Many people probably just dismissed him as a crazy man. One day an interesting thing happens to him, though. Jesus sees him and recognizes what is ailing him. He heals the man and casts the demons out of him. Suddenly the man is in his right mind again. He is completely well. This certainly surprised the townspeople, but I'll bet no one was more surprised than the man who received the healing. Jesus tells him to go out and share the marvelous news that God has healed him. Here are a couple of main ideas in this lesson that we can discuss with our children.
1) God is powerful enough to heal. Isn't it wonderful that God is stronger than any sickness? Problems that seem impossible to us can be easily solved by God, because God is bigger than any sickness or trouble that we have. It doesn't even matter how long the problem has been there. God is always in control. In John 11:38-44 we read about Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. In Luke 8:22-25 we can read the story of Jesus calming the storm. The disciples ask each other, "Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him." It's always amazing to talk about the infinite power of God.
2) The healed man had to share his good news. Jesus changed the man's life when he healed him. It was probably the greatest thing that ever happened to him. When something great happens to us, we naturally want to share it with others. It's like receiving a great present, seeing a great movie, or making a wonderful new friend. It's hard to contain ourselves when we have great news. The word "gospel" means "good news." Why? Because the story of Jesus Christ is the best story ever told. When we hear good news we should tell everyone we can find.
