Sharing with others
Children's sermon
Object:
In advance, ask children to bring with them an item to be used in a church benevolence program.
Good morning, boys and girls. Last week I asked you to bring with you today something that will be given to another person that you do not even know. Our church is collecting these items so that we can share what we have with people who do not have as much as we do. Let's take a look at what we have brought today. (ask each child to bring to you the item that he/she brought and make a comment about it)
I want you to imagine a child like you somewhere in the world who needs very much what you have brought today. Because there is a war where this unknown friend lives, he does not have what you brought. Or maybe your unknown friend lives where there has been no rain and there is no food. Maybe your friend lives in a part of the world that has had a hurricane that destroyed his/her house, or a flood, or maybe a volcano has erupted near the place where he/she lives. Maybe this friend does not have any parents and lives in a home with other homeless children.
In our lesson today Saint Paul asked the Christians in Corinth to be very generous in giving an offering for the Christians in Jerusalem. It was a gift of love that Paul asked the Greek Christians to give to the people in another country. Paul said it would all balance out. Some day Paul thought that the people in Corinth, Greece, would need help and then the Jerusalem Christians would give to them.
Right now, the people in our country have a lot to give. Most of us have all of the food we can eat, all of the clothes we can wear, all the medicine we need when we get sick, and all of the blankets we need to stay warm. When we have all of those things plus many other things, Paul tells us that God wants us to share with people who do not have all of those things. Some day we may need help and Paul says that God would want other people to share with us the same way we shared with them.
A long time ago Paul asked for a big gift for the Christians in Jerusalem. In the next couple of weeks, we are going to give a big gift to (the name of the charity or mission you've chosen) and you are going to be a part of it.
Let's remember in our prayers the people who are having hard times, and let's thank God for all of the good things he has given us so that we can be givers to the people who need them.
