Sharing who we are
Children's sermon
Object:
ask members of the congregation to stand and tell about the talents or
jobs God has given them
All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one
individually just as the Spirit chooses. (v. 11)
Good morning, boys and girls. Have you ever noticed how different the people are that go to our church? (let them answer) Stand up and take a look at all of the people that are here today and you will probably not see many that look alike. Some people are very young, just a little older than you are, and some are older. But looks are not the things that make them really different. God has given each one of these people something different to do. Our church is like a big puzzle. It takes a lot of different people to fit together to make a church.
I am going to ask some people to stand up and tell me the job God has asked them to do and we will get an idea of how different we all are. We will also learn that we make a good church because we work well together and live in our town.
(have the members stand and say what their job is or have them tell what they do as members of the church such as a choir director or a lay speaker) What do you think about our church now? We have a teacher, a piano player, a secretary, a banker, a hospital worker, a nurse, and a doctor. We also have truck drivers, policemen, a fireman, and a hotel manager. We have someone who grows flowers and a dentist's helper. (name as many as you want, especially the diverse and unusual jobs)
This is great, isn't it? The Spirit of God has moved among us and made us a special people. It is kind of like our bodies. Think of all the different parts of our body and we can only see the ones on the outside. What if you were all thumbs and the person next to you was all feet? Wouldn't that be funny?
But we are not made that way and neither are the things we do all the same. It takes all of us working with the Spirit to be a whole church.
When you grow up, God has something for you to do that is special. One of you may be an astronaut and another a fisherman. Whatever talent God gives you to share will be great. Just remember that God needs all of us to be a part of his church and share with each other the great gifts that God has given us. Amen.
